Malala Yousafzai Inspires Canadian Filmmaker

Pakistan-Canadian journalist Mohsin Abbas is soaring high on the wings of a new passion – a documentary film he is making about the remarkable courage of a 15-year-old school girl from his native Pakistan.

“Malala: A Girl from Paradise” tells the story of Malala Yousafzai, who was shot last October while on a school bus with classmates.

Abbas recently spent four months in Pakistan with a four-member film crew. They interviewed friends and family of Malala for their documentary. He said insurgency in the volatile tribal regions make it one of the most dangerous areas in South Asia for working journalists.

The film explores how the failure to silence Malala has inspired men, women and children, not only in Swat Valley, but beyond the borders of Pakistan. The documentary tells how a young girl from a remote village stood up against stone age ideologues, who wanted to take a nation of 200 million back in time. Malala became a shining light and force for change, not only in her Swat Valley, but around the world, said Abbas.

“We have some remarkable interviews about how she has changed the mindsets of people. A prime example is a woman we interviewed whose family business for generations had been (traditional folk) dancing. This woman told us because of Malala, her daughters will not dance, but will go to school.”

He further mentioned that the females in this woman’s family have never been formally educated but learned how to make money for the home through performance of their traditional folk dances.

The film also explores the political intrigue and conspiracy theories that swirl around the attempted murder of Malala. The documentary, which will be in Urdu with English subtitles, will explain how the oppression of women, political tensions and social injustices led to the horrendous attack on the young schoolgirl.

Having survived being shot by the Taliban, Malala recently returned to school in Birmingham, England, where she now lives with her family while receiving treatment.

Mohsin Abbas is an award-winning Pakistani-Canadian journalist, filmmaker and press freedom activist, is editor of the Diversity Reporter, a multilingual weekly newspaper for newcomers and immigrants in Canada.

He plans to rejoin his crew in Pakistan this summer for the second phase of filming and post-production work. He hopes to screen this film at various film festivals across Canada this September.(dawn.com)

Geo Tez will be a general entertainment channel with English and Pakistani programming.

Meera & Mother Baffled Over Pakistan’s Independence Date

Meera jee, the outspoken Pakistani filmstar, who always cheers attendees with her English vinglish, got baffled over Pakistan’s Independence Date during recent press conference of Pakistan Justice Party.

A big crowd of journalists reached Lahore High Court Hall where filmstar Meera along with her mother Shafqat Zahra Bokhari and many lawyers were to elaborate the manifesto of their Pakistan Justice Party in a press conference. We all know that the glamorous actress Meera has now geared to contest general election on the national assembly seat NA-126, against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan but she is still confused over Pakistan’s Independence Date.

While addressing press, Meera puffed her face and then just stopped to ask the years of existence of our homeland Pakistan, once again making fun of herself. Afterwards Meera’s mother Shafqat Zahra, who will contest elections on Justice Party ticket, addressed the conference. She kept repeating that she belongs to education department, but could not stop everyone bursting into laughter when she narrated a verse of Shaer-e-Mashriq, Allama Iqbal, and just created a total mess by stating, “Ye Khaki To Koi Nari He Na Noori He” of the original verse:

Amal Se Zindagi Banti Hai Jannat Bhi, Jahanum Bhi
Ye Khaki Apni Fitrat Mein Na Noori Hai Na Naari Hai

Is this ignorance or patriotism!
What fate Meera and her mother will bring to Pakistan. The choice is yours!

Pakistani television channels also splashed the story, hotly anticipating another high-profile cross-border union after the 2010 nuptials of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza.

Akram said he and Sen are good friends only.

“She is one of the most graceful and decent ladies I have come across,” said Akram of the 37-year-old Bollywood star. “It was huge fun working as judge with Sushmita as she is a thorough professional and presents herself gracefully.”

He further mentioned that he is devoted to bringing up his two sons, Taimur and Akbar.

“I want to bring them up and make them good and successful human beings, so my life is devoted to my sons.”

“I have always felt at home in India and the kind of respect I get in India is very pleasing so I will continue to work as and when I get time, but as my sons also needed time I have taken leave from the IPL this year,” said Wasim Akram.
